How Link Limits & Viral Spike Thresholds Work
One of the biggest fears when using a link shortener is success. “What happens if my link goes viral? Will it stop working? Will I get a huge bill?”
At Linkryse, we designed our system to handle viral traffic without punishing you. This guide explains our unique Viral Spike Threshold system and how it keeps your links alive.
The Golden Rule: Links Never Die
No matter which plan you are on, we never redirect your visitors to an error page just because you hit a limit. Your links will always work.
The Two Types of Limits
To understand how your account works, it helps to distinguish between the two main limits:
- Creation Limit (Account Level): This is how many new links you can create per month. If you hit this, you just can’t make new ones until the 1st of the next month.
- Viral Spike Threshold (Link Level): This is the limit on how many detailed analytics clicks a single link can record per month.
What is the “Viral Spike Threshold”?
Think of the Viral Spike Threshold as a Circuit Breaker for your analytics.
Processing detailed analytics (Country, City, Device, OS, Browser) for millions of clicks is expensive. To keep our prices low (starting at $0), we set a generous cap on how much detailed data we store for a single link.
The “Per-Link” Advantage
Most competitors use an Account-Wide Limit. If one link goes viral and eats up your quota, all your other links stop tracking too.
Linkryse is different. Our limits apply to each link individually. If Link A hits the threshold, Link B is completely unaffected. Your viral success doesn’t break your other campaigns.
What Happens When I Hit the Limit?
If a link exceeds its monthly Viral Spike Threshold (e.g., 2,500 clicks on the Hobby plan), the “Circuit Breaker” trips for that specific link.
| Feature | Status | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Redirects | ✅ Active | Visitors still go to your destination instantly. |
| Total Click Count | ✅ Active | The main counter on your dashboard keeps going up. |
| Detailed Analytics | ⏸️ Paused | We stop recording Country, Device, and OS data to save space. |
The Monthly Reset (The “Healer”)
The best part? It’s not permanent.
On the 1st of every month, our system runs a “Healer” process. It resets the counter for every link in your account.
If you went viral in January and hit the cap, your detailed analytics will automatically turn back ON in February. You don’t need to upgrade forever just because of one lucky spike.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Will my visitors see an error page if I hit the limit?
No. Never. They will be redirected as normal.
Q: Do I lose the data that was paused?
Yes. During the “Paused” state, we do not record the detailed data (like City or Device) to the database. It cannot be recovered later. However, the Total Click Count is always accurate.
Q: Can I unpause it immediately?
Yes. If you upgrade your plan to a higher tier (e.g., from Hobby to Pro), the higher limit applies immediately, and tracking will resume instantly.
